died inside the car after crashing into a tree and traffic will be affected on monterey road after a man died inside his car. we have another problem where a street sweeper hit a power pole and live on that scene to tell us more about how that is affecting traffic. good morning. traffic has been shut down between taylor and that's because a city of san jose street sweeper somehow crashed foot that power pole and you can see it is completely down and it's extremely dark out here, traffic lights are out as well as street lights are out. now police and firefighters are called here at 5:00 this morning, sparks were flying because the power pole was down and police are interviewing and determining what caused him to hit the pole as a precaution and police have shut down northbound coleman lanes before

pg&e shut off the electricity. electricity has been knocked down to 577 customers in the area and we spoke with a sergeant who tells us what his immediate worry was. >> is a sergeant you were supposed to hear from tells us they were concerned about people in this area initially because live wires were down and they thought a fire was going to happen, firefighters were called here but they left, but i think we have that tape to hear what the sergeant said. >> our first concern because of the live wires and the dangers involved with that we have taken precautionary measures to prevent any further injuries to any parties. >> and the drive, how is his condition. >> it appears he will be okay at this point.

morning with the opinions she is hearing this morning. kyla campbell? what are you hearing. >> reporter: most of the people are able to hear this, but back there people are singing and dancing and most people are having a good time and there are people here who support proposition 8 and many are from california. so many of these people have been waiting since friday with the hopes of goating in the doors this morning. many people wanted to hear the arguments for and against prop 8 firsthand and they wanted the exact information the u.s. supreme court justices will be reviewing in the coming months. and i spoke with one of the attorneys who is defending proposition 8. >> they are redefining marriage for the entire count train we are working on this through the democratic institution and we want them to allow the american

people to continue to do that. >> reporter: an arguments get underway in about an hour and they are scheduled to last about an hour and 15 minutes and it is not long to hear both for and against california's ban on same-sex marriage and i can hear people talking through megaphones and the majority of people here are in support of same-sex marriage and just a reminder, people want to know when the u.s. supreme court will making a decision on this case and that will not be happening until at least june and we spoke with the attorney who is defending proposition 8 and he said the typical time is three months and it does not mean they have to return an opinion by then but who knows when that will happen but next time i see you we can talk about -- we can talk about the possible outcome of this case, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 morning news. and in the california supreme courbuilding, they

held a rally and marched from the castro district to city hall. many in the crowd say they have been waiting years at a chance for marriage equality and some traveled miles including two women who have been together 39 years who drove in from davis. >> i know we are going to win but i'm not sure how big but what it depends on is how the justices think about their legacy. >> last night's march ended with a rally at city hall and they are starting to plan a celebration in june when the supreme court is expected to release that ruling. several bay area cities are showing their support for same- sex marriage by flying a rainbow flag at city hall and this is hayward, san leandro and alameda are also flying the rainbow flag this week. stay with us for continuing

coverage and david stevenson is also outside and he has a seat within the supreme court room tore live argument -- for live arguments. they are mopping up hot spots from just hours ago at that apartment building and these are photos where firefighters have been battling a fire since 2:30 a.m. a fire caused part of that roof to collapse and luckily everybody escaped safely and no injuries were reported. the investigation into the cause of that fire will continue. tonight there will be another meeting in san francisco on a controversial idea to take away parking spaces on polk street. a meeting held last week was as you can see standing room only. they want to add bike lanes between market and mcalester.

it would plan to remove 20 blocks of street parking and many business owners are worried it will hurt their businesses. sal is covering quite a few things, sal? >> yes, i want to mention traffic is getting busier in the traditional commutes in the normal places, and let's look at highway 24, we do have traffic as you drive in some of the spots especially when you get to oh written do and here it is not that bad at the bay bridge toll plaza, we have a little bit of a back up on the approach and there is no major problems on the bridge. if you are driving northbound 680 -- northbound 680 in fremont, a crash at auto mall between union city and fremont, that traffic is okay so far. let's go to steve.

a little bit of light rain, not measurable here but some measurable amounts in northern nevada but that drag is across some clouds and some breaks, napa airports is close. we have one tomorrow into thursday and a strong one may be a possibility with weekend rain not in sink with it. it's more of a westerly breeze and we have 40s on the lows and a westerly breeze is in place. you can see it clipped over us overnight and a couple are right there and most have moved off the east and 40s on the temperatures and hayward still 50s and the key is that breeze in place and napa airport also which gives us an indication of the on shore breeze, eureka,

. welcome back, we have new details about a stabbing in santa rosa we first reported yesterday morning. sheriff's deputies are still looking for two men who stabbed a boy while riding his bike. his attackers said they just got out of prison and they also asked him if he belonged to a

gang and if he wanted to fight. the teen is recovering from his wounds in the roseland neighborhood. it is a link between a chase and a shootout in texas and the head of colorado's prison system. showcase tied the crimes together and ballistics said the same gun used in the shootout was also used to shoot tom clements at his home in colorado. days later, it turned up in text and he shot a deputy touching off in a chase which ended in a gun battle where that suspect died. they are making row bow calls to families in newtown connecticut where the shooting rampage occurred. >> he will play a key role in determining whether the connecticut assembly will pass legislation restricting your

sal? >> things are getting busy all over the place and as we look at these commutes, you can see the traffic on interstate 880 is moving along well, if you are driving on 880 north and southbound, it's not a bad drive at all and you can see it moving all the way to the downtown area, 580 looks good and in stevenson, there is a crash on the shoulder and westbound bay bridge, traffic is backed up for a 15 or 10 minute delay getting into san francisco. this morning's commute is going to be okay in the livermore valley all the way to dublin and we are looking at highway 4, in fact it has been surprisingly good and we will not ask too many questions so just let it be. let's go to steve. >> all right, thank you, a little system went by and we have a lot of low clouds and those are still in place so

partly cloudy skies and a couple of light showers and most of that looks like it's cleared off heading towards the east and we still don't get the westerly breeze in place, 59 oakland a-48 in san francisco and no doubt about it, out to the delta, a little more sun today, these are very weak systems and another one is coming in and a stronger one by friday and saturday and possible rain by the weekend. 50s and 60s on the temperatures and settling in and we will not see much change and it will start to cloud up on saturday and there is a possibility of some rain on saturday. time now, we are following breaking news just coming in from mexico and an earthquake has been reported, this one triggered alarms in mexico city as well. buildings were swaying and people were running out into the streets. right now it is not clear how

and alex savage has been there since 4:30 on how much this damage has caused, alex. they will have another place to live and it burned through several apartment units in second and third story apartments and they have some business storefronts on the ground floor. and with the alameda fire department, they say a large portion did craps. crews found large flames shooting from the upper stories of this building and this is on park street on san jose avenue. everybody who lives there was able to make it out safely but because of the size alameda had to fight it from the outside and they took a defensive position and they used latter trucks to get up on to the roof. this was not an easy fire to get under control. >> the challenging parts was

that they are old and they have heavy timber and they are broken into many small areas. there is at least a few different areas and they are you have to get to. >> the cause of this fire will be investigated but the division chief he did tell us there is a vacant unit that they will certainly take a closer look at. to give you an idea how big it was, it took all all meet firefighters in fact they had to call in other oakland firefighters to handle the calls. as i mentioned, there were a number of businesses including a clothing store and salon. the fire department does say that a number of these businesses will be suffering smoke and water damage including this clothing store here but what firefighters did is they actually put some tarps over the clothes and they tried

to salvage it and in speaking with that business, she said she has insurance so that is a good thing. the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, alex savage ktvu channel 2 morning news. the fire forced 20 people from their home and it happened midnight on landis avenue. nobody was hurt but a pregnant woman who lives in the building what taken to a hospital as a precaution. >> until they determine it is safe to go back in, all the people within the units will be put up in hotels by the red cross. >> the fire is still being investigated but at this point it appears to be accidental. we are now just 30 minutes away from the beginning of oral arguments on prop 8 california's ban on same-sex marriage. we are live outside the building and you can see

safely back with her mother. they were the only crew to capture the rescue which came only five hours after the amber alert. the suv was stolen from outside her mother's home and last night her mother expressed her relief gratitude and joy. >> i want to say thanks god to everybody and people who prayed for my baby, the police department everybody, my baby is okay, thanks god. they are checking the jeep for clues and they are looking for a white or latino woman who stole the car shortly before the baby disappeared. law enforcement agencies have patrol cars equipped with special cameras that can scan license plates on the highway

it was relatively light and now we have more cars on the road and there are no major problems reported to chp but you can see traffic is getting busier. bay bridge toll plaza, 10 to 15 minute wait getting on to the actual stand and if you are driving on 808 -- 880 westbound, it is a nice looking drive. let's go to steve. read rain in mendocino county and the system which is responsible is left in the picture and there is a lot of low clouds, and mostly cloudy partly cloudy skies and a westerly breeze is in place and it is already northern nevada which is moving quickly and you can see the features in the atmosphere and it is on the way out of here but it allowed

everything to come in. these are very weak systems and sun and clouds and a stronger system will get close to us by friday and saturday and we'll see if it drifts over us and we'll see if we get rain but we still have a few days to deal with that. you can see clouds are inches through here and that's why we are going with partly cloudy skies and we have some fog about a quarter mile visibility, upper 40s to near 50 degrees and 50 degrees even out to fairfield and it will be a breezy cool day. we had a lot of 20s and 30s and that cloud cover is definitely the cause. a big system is heading out to sea and it still continues to snow and it is single digits in parts of the plains. that is locked in and it has been the pattern for us since

january and i don't see much changing. we have 50s and 60s on the temperatures and that's near average or slightly below closer to the coast not much change here, could have some drizzle and that stronger system will continue and maybe we will have some rain on saturday. it is causing some big problems on the east coast and this is video in new jersey, you can barely see the car as they travel along, a lot of snow on the roads, hundreds of flights had to be canceled because of the storm and it is mostly in the new york area but boy a lot of snow. we have an update we are following in mexico city where thousands were sent running into the streets. it has been revised to a 5.5

. all right, steve, welcome back, here is a quick look at some of the top stories we are following at 4:44, the supreme court, here is oral arguments on prop 8, california's ban on same-sex marriage, the court will hear from both sides and done expect a rule -- don't expect a ruling until june. a car crash has shut down

southbound lanes on monterey road and the driver of that car slammed into two trees and a light pole. investigators are saying it's too early to know if alcohol or drugs were involved. and in alameda, they are wrapping up the fire and it happened 2:30 on park street and it took hours to get it under control. part of the roof collapsed but luckily nobody was hurt. power is back on after a street sweeper caused a power out and and -- power outage and here is more on the efforts with the street that had to be closed. >> reporter: the street lights came on colder and pg&e just told us now just 25 people are without power and you can see

this light pole was taken down by a vehicle and pg&e is working to restore power to everybody. firefighters tell us just before 5:00 a street sweeper traveling northbound crashed into the power pole. it was a concern because live wires were down and as a precaution they shut down all northbound lanes and the driver of the sweeper was not injured but the supervisor is investigating what could have caused this crash and they are trying to keep them away from the scene. >> it remains fair and we are asking them to find alternative rods. >> initially, we were just updated in the last few minutes that only 23 people are

affected now and they should have power back on at 8:15. i did speak with the spokesperson from san jose and he does not believe alcohol or drugs were involved and the driver does appear to be fine but is shaken up that this happen and he said a car may have caught him off and that is what caused him to crash into this light pole. we will stay here on the scene to update you to see when the northbound lanes will open backup and police are asking you to avoid the area, it is a pretty heavily avoided street, coleman avenue. meanwhile, amanda knox's returned to the united states after her acquittal and is a student at the university of washington. she said the news of a new trial is painful but she is confident she will be exxon

arraignmented. -- exonerated. her ex-boyfriend is also going to be retried but she will not attend that trial. robert was accused of making sexual advances towards the city administrator and yesterday they cleared him of any wrongdoing following an investigation and the details of that investigation will remain sealed. a california boy whose parents are two gay men sent a message to chief justice roberts before the trial began. >> i recently found out you had adopted two children, a boy and a girl. >> reporter: he retired his message to prop 8 protesters in san francisco. he wants a u.s. supreme court

nice looking drive and westbound livermore had some earlier problems but is now looking good. here is steve with your weather. low clouds are still in place and once we clear those off it will be partly sunny skies to mostly sunny skies and winds are moving west to east and temperatures are 40s to near 50s and temperatures seem to be stuck in novato at 41 degrees and in oakland san pablo bay, showing signs of a southwest winds and we have a system that will clip us and it keeps a cooler pattern in place and a stronger low is playing a roll in our weekend far -- a role in our weekend forecast and weak system is up but there is a possibility of something

coming in on sunday and still it is far off, partly sunny skies, showers seem to be done and we have 50s and 60s, everybody is close to the bay and it is slightly cooler and we have upper 60s and san jose, 61, woodside is in there, san bruno passive can 57, a lot of clouds are in place wednesday and thursday, and we cloud it up, it looks mostly cloudy on sunday, possibility of some rain on sunday. the stock is up about 1% after they sent a mysterious tweet. they said i am going to put my money where my mouth is in a major way. they are still working out the details and the tweet raised questions by some bloggers
